Situation:
A compact storage module manufacturer was working on a new storage module design which would be lightweight and last longer. They were searching for a solutionto assemble thin cast aluminum housing parts.
Challenges:
The client was facing the following challenges which had to be taken in consideration before suggesting a solution
- The CSM aluminum housing was so thin that mechanical solutions couldn’t be considered
- The assembly solution should add rigidity to the joints and survive impact and vibration during transportation
- The assembly solution must be resistant to attack by hot paraffin and maintain a long-term module seal
Solutions:
The manufacturer tested using adhesives for assembling the thin cast aluminium housing parts for the new design. LOCTITE HY 4090 structural adhesives was used for bonding.
The parts were first cleaned with LOCTITE 7063 cleaner to remove any impurities and LOCTITE HY 4090 was dispensed on the plates before joining them together. Post allowing them to cure for 20-30 minutes the assembly was tested for strength and ability to maintain seal in paraffin immersion tests.
Results:
Bonding with LOCTITE HY 4090:
- Rendered the right strength to assembly on thin aluminum parts
- Allowed for speedy manufacturing
- Formed a reliable seal between aluminum housing pieces in paraffin immersion tests
